About
Hi! My name is Brandon. I started Renaissance Games in order to pursue my passion of creating video games.
Like most gamers, I grew up playing video games. Atari, Nintendo, Sega Genesis...you name it. That was where my love for what would now be called "retro" games began. And that love has only grown since. For about as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of creating my own video games, and it is that dream that still drives me today.
Fast forward a few short decades... I've had the great fortune of being involved in the creation of a few relatively obscure games with some small, independent game studios. However, in late 2015 I found myself between projects and itching to create something new. This time, I knew I wanted to do it on my own. But I had never created an entire game by myself. The idea seemed daunting, but I was determined to prove (to myself more than anyone else) that I could do it. So...where to start?
I decided to focus my energy on the type of games I knew best. Role-playing games. As a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series by Square (now Square Enix), my thoughts immediately went to those games. Now, obviously, Final Fantasy has grown into a massive franchise of AAA games requiring teams of hundreds of people to make. But it didn't start that way. I thought back to the very first game in the series; one that still holds a special place in my heart. Not only did I know this game very well, but it's comparatively simple design and mechanics made it the ideal candidate for what would become the passion-project of the next 5 years of my life...
I quickly got to work with a clear goal in my mind. Recreate the original Final Fantasy as faithfully as possible. As an added bonus, I also set out to add a slew of brand new content to the game, such as additional job classes inspired by the later games in the series. Over time, the project began to grow in its scope, eventually including new job abilities for the original classes in order to keep balance with their new counterparts, and also including two distinct game modes: Classic Mode and Renaissance Mode. The former being a way of "preserving" the beauty of the original game while fixing all known bugs. As for the latter, Renaissance Mode would be the home of all the new features that I wanted to add to the game. It was the place where I could stretch my creative wings a bit and breathe new life into this 30 year old game.
I titled my new project Final Fantasy Renaissance and, simultaneously, found the name of my new game development company.
Renaissance Games was born from my love for retro games, and a desire to create something new, inspired by the games of the past. Although I can claim no ownership over the Final Fantasy property, nor do I have any intention of seeking to make any profit off of my first solo game design venture...what I have learned from this project I intend to apply to many original game designs going forward.
Thank you for visiting Renaissance Games!
